Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 10, 2026

Dawn opens and edits Markdown files, on Mac and on iPhone. Neither app collects any data about you. There are no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no telemetry, and no advertising. Nothing you read or write is sent to us or to anyone else.

What we collect

Nothing. We have no servers that receive your information because there is nothing to receive.

Dawn for Mac

Dawn works entirely on your Mac. Workspaces are plain folders you choose; files open in place, and edits are written straight back to those files. To do its job, Dawn keeps a few things in local app storage: your list of workspaces and recent files, window state, and your editing preferences. This never leaves your Mac; deleting the app removes it.

Two features deserve a precise explanation:

  • The agent bridge. Dawn runs a small local server so agent clients on the same Mac can open your documents at dawn.localhost links. It listens only on your machine (on a dawn.localhost port), serves only files you have opened in Dawn, and is never exposed to your network or the internet. The links do not work anywhere else.
  • The agent skill. When you enable "Use in Agent," Dawn writes a small instruction file into the skills folder of the clients you choose (Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor). It tells the agent how to hand you Dawn links; it does not collect, read, or transmit anything.

To check for a newer version, Dawn makes a standard web request to releases.getdawn.co when it opens, every few hours while it runs, and when you choose Check for Updates. This request carries no personal information beyond what any web request includes, and nothing about your files or usage.

Dawn for iPhone

To do its job, Dawn keeps a few things in local app storage on your iPhone:

  • A list of your recently opened files, and the bookmarks needed to reopen them.
  • Folders you have added, stored as secure references provided by iOS.
  • Which files and folders you have pinned.
  • Your reading preferences: text size, line spacing, serif/sans choice, and theme.
  • A copy of any Markdown file you open from a web link, so it can be read again.

This information never leaves your device. Your own files stay where they are: when you edit one, Dawn writes your changes back to that same file and nowhere else. Deleting the app removes everything Dawn stored.

Dawn connects to the network only in response to your own actions:

  • If a document you open references a remote image, font, or video, your device requests it directly from wherever it is hosted, exactly as a web browser would. Dawn does not log or relay these requests.
  • If you tap a link inside a document, it opens in your default browser; Dawn has no built-in browser.
  • If you share a web link to Dawn from another app, Dawn downloads that Markdown file directly from where it is hosted (a GitHub page is fetched from raw.githubusercontent.com) so you can read it.

When you choose to save a share card as an image, Dawn asks for permission to add that one image to your photo library. This is a write-only action: Dawn never reads, browses, or uploads your photos.

Third parties

Neither app contains third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. The libraries used to render math, code, and diagrams (KaTeX, highlight.js, and Mermaid) are open source and bundled inside the apps; they run locally and send nothing anywhere.

Children

Dawn contains no objectionable content and collects no data, so it is suitable for users of all ages.
