Dawn for Mac

How do I install Dawn on my Mac?

Download the DMG, open it, and drag Dawn into Applications. Dawn is notarized by Apple, so macOS verifies it the first time you open it, with no warnings to click through. It needs macOS 11 or later on an M1 or newer Mac.

Where do my files live?

Wherever they already are. A workspace in Dawn is a plain folder you choose. Files open in place, nothing is imported or converted, and there is no library or database to migrate away from.

Does Dawn save my changes?

Automatically. There is no save button; a moment after you stop typing, Dawn writes the file on disk, ready for your next commit.

What does "Use in Agent" set up?

It installs a small skill into the agent clients you choose (Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor) and runs a local bridge on your Mac. The skill lets your agent hand you durable dawn.localhost links to Markdown files, which open in the client's built-in browser. The links resolve only on your machine; nothing is exposed to the network. See the privacy policy for exactly what runs where.

How do updates work?

Dawn checks its release feed when it opens and every few hours while it runs, and offers new versions when they're ready. You can also choose Check for Updates from the menu. There is no account and nothing to sign in to.

How do I open a .md file on iPhone?

Three ways: open the Files app and tap any Markdown or text file; in another app, share the file and choose Dawn; or add a file or folder from Dawn's home screen. To read a Markdown file on the web, share its link to Dawn from Safari.

Which file types are supported?

.md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, .mkdn, .mdtext, and plain .txt. Dawn renders full CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, including tables, task lists, code blocks, LaTeX math, and Mermaid diagrams.

How do I edit a file on iPhone?

Double-tap the page where you want to change something, and the caret lands there. Tap Done to go back to reading. Your changes are written back to the same file.

Does Dawn change my files?

Only when you ask it to: when you edit a file, or when you move or rename one yourself in Dawn for Mac. Dawn never uploads your files anywhere.

Does Dawn work offline?

Yes. Documents render entirely on your device. A connection is only needed if a document loads an image hosted on the web.

How do I share a passage?

Select text in a document, then use the share bar to export it as plain text, as Markdown, or as a styled image card.

What are the requirements?

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later.
