Dawn for Mac updates itself.Check for Updates is in the Dawn menu.

  • Windows preview

Dawn has its own icons, and a first Windows preview.

Every icon is drawn for Dawn now: softer corners, one steady line, and each one sits right where it always did. And Dawn now runs on Windows, as a preview.

New

  • Dawn for Windows, as a preview. Download it from getdawn.co, and it updates itself from then on. Check for Updates is in Ctrl+K.
  • Every icon in Dawn is drawn for it, in one steady line.

Improved

  • A workspace name too long for the sidebar ends in "…", and hovering it shows the whole name.
  • New notes start from the sidebar or ⌘N (Ctrl+N on Windows), in the folder you're in. ⌘K no longer offers New File, where it couldn't tell which folder you meant.
  • Dawn appears once under Quick Look in System Settings, not twice. Mac

Fixed

  • Dawn links made a while ago open again. After some updates, an older copy of Dawn's background helper could keep running and hold on to them; Dawn now replaces it when it starts. Mac

Your version and your agent's, side by side.

When you and your agent change the same line, Dawn shows both side by side, and you click the one to keep. Everything else you both wrote comes together on its own.

New

  • When your agent changes a note while you're writing in it, whatever doesn't overlap comes together, even different words in the same paragraph. A short notice says so. Show changes marks what came in, and you can put any of it back.
  • A paragraph you both changed is marked, with your version beside the new one and the words that differ underlined. Click the one to keep. With several, step through them from the notice, or keep all of yours or all of the new ones at once.
  • The rest of the note keeps saving while a paragraph waits for your choice.
  • Close the note or quit before choosing, and both versions stay in the file, marked, so the choice is waiting for you when you open it again.
  • All of this works the same when you open a note through a Dawn link in your browser.

Improved

  • Dawn's window opens with your workspace already in place, instead of filling in piece by piece. When it takes a moment, the Dawn mark shows until everything is ready.
  • Folders that belong to build tools, like Cargo's target or a Python environment, are left out of the file list and search, so workspaces with code in them open faster.

Fixed

  • With Dawn set to light on a Mac set to dark, the sidebar no longer flashes dark as Dawn opens.
  • ⌘Q now waits until every window has saved, so the last words you typed are kept.
  • Opening Dawn straight into a workspace shows its files, not the list of workspaces.
  • HTML written into a note shows as its source, and --> no longer turns into an arrow.
  • Mac

Links that work in Obsidian too.

Links between notes now save just as you see them.

Improved

  • Links like [[Weekly digest]] and [[Plan#Next steps]], and embedded images, are saved just as you see them, so Obsidian and other apps can follow them. A link an earlier version saved with backslashes is cleaned up the next time you edit its paragraph.
  • Code blocks name their language however your agent wrote it: a block marked ts says TypeScript and py says Python, where both used to say Plain text. A language Dawn doesn't list, like YAML, shows its own name. Go and zsh blocks are now colored too.
  • The language list in a code block lines up with the code under it and highlights like Dawn's other menus.

Fixed

  • Code blocks, the source view and some labels could show a system font on a Mac without Geist installed. Dawn now always uses the Geist and Geist Mono it ships with.
  • Mac

Your files stay as they were written.

Editing a note in Dawn now changes only what you edit.

Improved

  • Saving changes only the lines you edited. Tables, lists, spacing and everything else stay exactly as you or your agent wrote them, so a one-word fix is a one-line change in git.
  • When an agent changes a file you have open, Dawn shows its version and leaves it as the agent wrote it.
  • A diagram too wide for the column is laid out again to fit, so its labels stay easy to read. Narrow the window and it lays itself out again.
  • The source view of CSV, JSON and JSONL files opens any size of file.
  • Mac

Press Space on a note in Finder.

Notes now look like Dawn even before you open them.

New

  • Press Space on a Markdown file in Finder and Quick Look shows it the way Dawn does: headings, tables, task lists, code in Dawn's colors, math and diagrams, light or dark with your Mac.
  • It works whether or not Dawn is open.
  • After an update, Dawn shows what's new in that version, once.

Improved

  • A long note in Quick Look shows its first part and points you to Dawn for the rest, so the preview always comes up quickly.
  • Mac

Export as PDF from ⌘K, right after you open Dawn.

A small update that makes Export as PDF in ⌘K work every time.

New

  • After an update, Dawn shows what's new in that version, once. Help › What's New in Dawn, also in ⌘K, opens it again.

Fixed

  • Right after Dawn opened with your notes restored, ⌘K showed Export as PDF… greyed out with "Open a note to export it." It now works as soon as a note is open.
  • Mac

Export a note as a PDF, and diagrams in Dawn's colors.

Any note can now leave Dawn as a PDF set for paper. Diagrams, code and dark mode also got a quieter, more readable look, shared with Dawn for iPhone.

New

  • Export as PDF, in the More menu or ⌘K, turns a note into a PDF that looks like Dawn on paper. It asks where to save, starting in the folder you used last.
  • Tables, code, formulas and diagrams fit the page, and nothing is cut between pages: a heading never ends a page, and a long table repeats its header row.
  • Links still work in the PDF, and a link's address is printed next to it.

Improved

  • Diagrams are drawn in Dawn's own colors, follow light and dark mode right away, and pie charts use eight calm colors of equal weight.
  • Code uses a new set of colors that are all easy to read in both themes. None of them is blue, so links stay the only blue on the page.
  • In dark mode, body text is a little softer for long reading, and headings, bold text and links stand out more.
  • The source view of CSV, JSON and JSONL files opens large files right away, with no size limit.
  • A table that fits the page fills its width instead of leaving empty space.
  • Chinese text lines up in code blocks.
  • The launch screen stays tidy however many workspaces and files you have: it shows the most recent few, with "Show all" for the rest.
  • Dividers are a thin, quiet line in the app and in PDFs, and a PDF never starts or ends a page with one.

Fixed

  • Backspace on the empty line under a divider removes only that line.
  • Ticking a numbered task like "1. Open the big file" no longer adds a backslash to the file.
  • The title of a JSONL log no longer jumps when switching between Records and Source.
  • Mac

CSV, JSON and JSONL open as tables, fields and records you can edit.

Dawn now reads and edits more of the files your agents make, not only notes. A note's frontmatter also moves up to the top of the page as Properties.

New

  • CSV and TSV files open as a table you can edit in place. Add or remove rows and columns, find any cell, and paste a block straight from a spreadsheet.
  • JSON files open as a page of fields. Click a value to change it, and rename, delete or add fields. If the file has a mistake, Dawn shows where it is and often offers the fix.
  • JSONL logs open as a list of records that follows new ones as they arrive, and can show the newest first.
  • Any data file can switch to its source text and back.
  • A note's frontmatter shows as Properties above its title, ready to open and edit. Add properties from the title or by typing /properties.
  • Use in Agent now works with CSV, JSON and JSONL files, so you can share them with your agent too.

Improved

  • Notices about a file that changed or was deleted use plainer words and two clear buttons, such as "Use the new version" and "Keep mine".
  • The inspector shows when a note was last edited.
  • If another app takes the port Dawn links use, Dawn takes it back on its own so your links work again, and the Use in Agent status names that app in the meantime.

Fixed

  • Save it again on a note that was deleted now actually saves it.
  • Mac

Plain text files, and a sidebar that keeps up.

Dawn now opens .txt files as plain text, and new files show up in the sidebar sooner.

New

  • Text files open in a plain-text editor and are saved exactly as they were. A # or * is just a character, never Markdown.
  • A Refresh button in the sidebar, also in View › Refresh Files, re-reads the workspace whenever you want it to.

Improved

  • New files appear in the sidebar right away, even in large workspaces, and the sidebar catches up when you come back to the window.
  • Files that aren't Markdown show their extension next to their name.
  • The find bar is clearer and counts in words, like "3 of 12" or "No matches".

Fixed

  • The Moved to Trash message always shows the whole sentence and shortens only the file name.
  • Mac

Inline formulas update as you type.

A small update that makes editing inline math and links calmer.

Improved

  • An inline formula now redraws right in its sentence as you type, and a long formula wraps in the editor so you can read it whole.
  • Leaving the formula editor keeps what you typed, and ⌘Z undoes it.
  • The formula editor, the link editor and the note picker share one look and close when you scroll the page. Clicking away from the link editor keeps a link you changed.
  • Wide diagrams stay inside the text column, like tables, and scroll sideways when they need more room.

Fixed

  • Clicking an inline formula can no longer replace it with the next key you press.
  • A popover that opens above a line now sits on that line instead of floating far above it.
  • Mac

Edit diagrams and formulas in place, and sort your workspace.

Diagrams, math and SVG now stay on the page while you change their source. The sidebar can sort your files and shows what kind each one is.

New

  • Click a Mermaid diagram, a math block or an SVG to edit it. The picture stays where it is, its source opens beneath it, and the picture updates as you type. Done, Esc or a click elsewhere puts it away.
  • Inline formulas open in a small editor next to the formula, so the sentence around it stays still.
  • Sort a workspace by name or by when files were last edited. Dawn remembers the choice for each workspace.
  • Every file in the sidebar has an icon for its type, so files and folders line up.

Improved

  • Wide tables stay inside the text column and scroll sideways, so the page keeps one clean edge.
  • Tables with Chinese, Japanese or Korean text stay neatly lined up when you open the file in another app.
  • When Dawn links need repair, the Use in Agent card in the sidebar says so plainly instead of looking like a tip.

Fixed

  • Empty lines and empty table cells are saved as blank space, so other apps no longer show a stray "<br />".
  • Mac

Line breaks that show, steadier lists, and Open in Dawn from the browser.

Notes written in other apps now look the way their authors wrote them, and typing Chinese and other languages that use an input method works properly.

New

  • A single line break inside a paragraph now shows as a line break, the way Obsidian and Notion show it.
  • The browser view of a Dawn link has an Open in Dawn button that brings the note straight into the app.

Improved

  • When you break a numbered list with a paragraph, the numbers carry on after it, and Backspace joins the two halves back together.
  • Wide diagrams stay large enough to read and scroll sideways when they need more room.
  • A long formula scrolls inside its own box instead of moving the page.

Fixed

  • Typing with an input method, such as Chinese, no longer adds an empty line for every character.
  • Saving a note no longer changes your bullet style or adds blank lines between list items, and long numbered lists stay aligned.
  • Diagrams and formulas display correctly again in the installed app.
  • Mac

The first public release of Dawn for Mac.

Dawn for Mac is a calm place to read, write and keep the Markdown files you and your agents make. Open a folder as a workspace, and every note in it is ready to read and edit right on the page.

New

  • Open any folder as a workspace, browse its notes in the sidebar, and keep notes from different workspaces open side by side in tabs.
  • Write on the page itself. Headings, lists, tasks, tables, code, quotes and links take shape as you type, and every change saves on its own.
  • Math, Mermaid diagrams, SVG and images show in the note, and the slash menu adds any of them.
  • Link notes with [[wikilinks]], see which notes link to the one you're reading, and jump between headings from the outline.
  • Search a whole workspace, find text in a note with ⌘F, and open any file with ⌘P.
  • When an agent or another app changes a file, the change appears right away. If you were in the middle of writing, Dawn asks which version to keep.
  • Use in Agent gives a note a link your agent client can open, so you can read and edit what it wrote in the browser too.
  • Make Dawn the app that opens Markdown files from Finder. Dawn keeps itself up to date.
