v2.0.0Latest

Edit right where you read.

Double-tap any line and start writing exactly there. The page looks the same while you type, and your changes go back to the same file.

New

  • Double-tap the page, or tap the pencil, to start editing. The cursor lands where your finger did.
  • A slim bar above the keyboard has bold, italic, headings, lists, checklists, links, quotes and code. Markdown you already know works too: start a line with # for a heading or - for a list.
  • Add a code block, a formula or a diagram from the + button. Tap a formula or a diagram to edit its source and watch it redraw as you type.
  • Edit the text in table cells right on the page.
  • Tap Done (✓) to go back to reading, right where you were. Changes save to the same file in Files or iCloud, and leaving the document or the app saves too.
  • Dawn changes only what you edited. Everything else in the file, front matter and line endings included, stays exactly as it was.
  • If a file changed somewhere else while you were editing, Dawn asks what to do: keep your changes, save yours as a copy, or use the other version.
  • Dawn now tells you when a newer version is on the App Store.

Improved

  • A diagram that can't be drawn shows its source and a short note about what's wrong.

Image cards that look like the page, and full-screen diagrams.

Shared image cards now show math and diagrams as they appear in Dawn, and any diagram can open on its own screen.

New

  • Tap a diagram to open it full screen, then pinch to look at the details.

Improved

  • Image cards show formulas and diagrams drawn as they are on the page, instead of their source text.
  • Wide code, tables, formulas and diagrams fit the card instead of being cut off.

Line breaks that show, and your text size from the first moment.

Notes now keep the line breaks their authors typed, and a few reading details are steadier.

New

  • A single line break inside a paragraph now shows as a line break, the way Obsidian, Bear and Notion show it.

Improved

  • Diagrams grow and shrink smoothly with the text when you pinch, and their labels stay inside their boxes.
  • The Today and This Week labels in your recent files are quieter and no longer sit on top of the list as it scrolls.
  • Reopening a document brings you back to where you left off without a flicker.

Fixed

  • Each document opens at the text size and font you chose, instead of the default.

Pictures stored next to your notes show up.

Images and other media that a note keeps in a nearby folder now appear in the document, and sharing a selection is more dependable.

Improved

  • Pictures and other media saved beside a note, such as in an images folder, now show in the page.
  • A large diagram stays big enough to read and scrolls sideways, instead of shrinking its labels too small.
  • A long inline formula scrolls inside itself instead of stretching the page.

Fixed

  • The share bar acts only when you tap it, never when your finger passes over it while selecting, and a copied diagram or formula stays whole.
  • Diagrams redraw in the right colours when you switch between light and dark.
  • Documents with many pictures appear sooner.

Pull down to see the latest version of a file.

Files you open with Open File or Browse Folder stay linked to the original, so you can pull down to get the newest version. Math written with dollar signs also displays properly.

New

  • Pull down on the home screen, inside a folder, or at the top of a document to re-read the latest version of a file edited somewhere else.
  • Math written as $…$, $$…$$, \(…\) or \[…\] now displays as math, as it does in Obsidian and other apps.

Fixed

  • Prices such as $5 and $10 stay ordinary text, and code and links are never mistaken for math.
  • Opening a file while another one was on screen could show the new title over the old text. Each file now opens in its own fresh page.
  • Sharing a selection that starts on the first line of a code block keeps it as one code block.

Dawn shows up in Files, and big folders open quickly.

This update makes Dawn easier to reach from the Files app, steadier with large and nested folders, and more dependable when you share.

New

  • Dawn now appears in the Files app's Open With menu for Markdown files.
  • Very large folders open quickly, and more files load as you scroll.

Improved

  • Sharing a whole document sends the actual .md file, so AirDrop, Messages, Notes and Save to Files receive a real Markdown file.
  • The share bar appears right at your selection and responds to the first tap. An image card or a Markdown copy keeps headings, lists, tables and code as they look on the page.
  • Folders inside a folder you added open at any depth, and so do search results from deep inside them.

Fixed

  • A file that is still in iCloud shows that it's downloading instead of freezing the app.
  • Tapping a saved folder that has moved or been deleted now tells you so instead of doing nothing.

Dawn for iPhone is on the App Store.

Dawn is a calm place to read Markdown on your iPhone, whether it came from your AI, your notes or a README. There's no account and nothing is tracked, and everything renders on your phone, so it works offline.

New

  • Markdown reads like a well-set page: headings, lists, task lists, tables that scroll sideways, highlighted code that folds away when it's long, math and Mermaid diagrams.
  • Pinch to size the text, choose Light, Dark or Auto, and jump between headings from the outline while a thin line shows how far you've read.
  • Frontmatter folds into a tidy Properties strip at the top of the page.
  • Select any passage and share it as plain text, as Markdown, or as an image card.
  • Open files from the Files app or iCloud Drive, browse whole folders with a preview of each file, and send a web link from Safari to read it in Dawn.
  • Recent files group themselves by Today, Yesterday and This Week. Pin the ones you come back to, and search names and contents.
  • A short How to Use Dawn guide is waiting in your recent files the first time you open the app.
